Insulated Glass Units are commonly known as IG's or Double Pane windows.  The pros to insulated glass are that they save you on your energy bill, they are more attractive and they provide a little better sound protection. The cons are that they are more expensive than alternatives, they are more difficult to replace, they are individually manufactured and so when your window breaks you can count on waiting a week to get it fixed because it has to be manufactured, also you have to have an installer come out to your house to measure it and then back out to install it so scheduling is a mess. A big reason why insulated glass is a waste is because the go bad in just a few years. Im not talking about johnny broke the window, instead I'm talking about how in just a few years the seals break and you've got mosture in between the double pane window. Now your having to replace your windows that have gone bad and all that money you saved on your light bill get put toward having your windows replaced. Hope you dont have too many to replace.

An alternative to putting insulated glass in your house is go get low e laminated glass put in. Laminated is a safety glass so its safer than plate and better than tempered. Its better against sounds of outside that you want to keep out, or sound you want to keep in I guess.  You cant break through easly at all just like you cant put a hole in your windshield easily so you can worry less about robbers. They wont go bad like insulated glass and they are going to save you just about the same on your light bill as an insulated glass unit would. The cost is just about the same when your having to install insulated glass and laminated low e glass.

It is my experience as a glass installer and a window replacement specialist that you should stay away from insulated glass units and instead look to laminated glass. But if you like spending money on windows that in the long run aren't going to save you any money because they go bad after a few years and you want a big expensive hassle when one of the insulated glass units break then go ahead and have double pane windows installed.

With the advent of electricity, the need to prevent current leakage brought about the invention of a variety of electrical insulators used to keep wires apart. These examples are on display at the Eagle Hostorical Museum in Eagle Wisconsin.
