Are You a Collector?

A collector is someone who collects cool stuff! Pretty simple, huh? But the 2packrats use a more definitive description: a collector is someone who has 3 or more of any one thing. Got 3 or more glass animals-- you are a glass animal collector. Got 3 or more comic books -- you collect comic books.

To refine our definition, the 2packrats also look at the quality of the items you collect. If you simply keep things regardless of their value or quality, you are more likely a hoarder rather than a collector. A true collector knows the history, value and significance of the stuff sitting on his shelves, filling up his garage, or on display throughout his den. Continue reading

Preserving Your Stamp Collection

The gradual degradation of stamps is one of the most important issues facing any collector, and one that can be easily solved by using stamp collecting albums. We all want to preserve our precious inventory for its inherent enjoyment, and we'd also like to pass them on to future generations. The problem, of course, is that as the stamps age, the more fragile they become. Atmospheric conditions can certainly take their toll on a person's stamp collection, often without the owner realizing it.

The Science of Shot Glasses

The name 'shot glass' was first used by The New York Times in 1940 when they tried to regulate the size of one shot of liquor. Shot basically means a small amount of liquid which is either drank in one gulp or is poured into a drink. Shot glasses are usually used for vodka, tequila, whiskey and liquor shots. In the early years, words like 'jiggers'(bigger than a shot glass) and 'pony'(holds only 1 ounce) were used to measure a standard amount of alcohol. The latter is still maintained until today in addition to the more common name, single and double shots. Many people aren't aware that the reason why glasses are made of thick glass is actually to absorb the shock when the glass is slammed on the table which often follows after a person consumes the alcohol.
